§       THE AGRICULTURE PROGRAM:                   

COURSES 2008 -2009

 

q       ANIMAL SCIENCE  (1 credit)

The Animal Science course is designed to provide an overview of the animal science industry.   It provides information on the biological make-up of various species of agricultural livestock.    It also provides students with information on animal behavior that would be beneficial before embarking on a career in Animal Science.  Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with the principles and practices essential in the production and management of farm animals and farm animal products for economic, recreational, and therapeutic uses; participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities

 

q       INTRODUCTION TO VETERINARY SCIENCE  (1 credit)

In this advanced animal science course, students will explore the field of veterinary medicine. Students will study the role of a veterinarian and veterinary technician in the diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases. Topics to be discussed include: veterinary terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, genetics, handling and restraint, and physical examinations along with common surgical skills.  Students will engage in a variety of laboratory activities and will participate in shadowing and/or other school-to-work experiences.

 

q       OUTDOOR RECREATION  (1 credit)

The Outdoor Recreation course is a combination of subject matter and planned learning experiences on the principles involved in outdoor safety, planning outdoor recreational activities, designing parks and special use areas, and outdoor recreational resources on public lands.  Instruction also emphasizes such factors as the establishment, management, and operation of land for recreational purposes.  Typical learning activities include hunter and boater education; ATV safety; Survival and first aid techniques; planning, designing and maintaining an outdoor recreational area; and participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities

 

q       FORESTRY  (1 credit)

The Forestry course is designed to teach technical knowledge and skills for entry-level positions in the production, protection, and management of timber and specialty forest resources. Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with assessing environmental factors affecting forest growth; cruising timber; planting trees; managing an established forest; selecting, grading and marketing forest raw materials for converting into a variety of consumer goods; harvesting timber or pulpwood; operating and maintaining equipment; managing forests for multiple purpose uses such as game preserves and recreation; participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities.

 

q       AQUACULTURE (1 credit)

The Aquaculture course is designed to teach knowledge and skills required for job entry into alternative agriculture through the husbandry of aquatic plants and animals.  The ultimate objective of this course is to help students plan, build, stock, and run aquaculture facilities of varied sizes.  Aquaculture projects require planning and management comparable to any other commercial endeavor. Typical learning activities include selecting a site, evaluating soil types, selecting equipment and planning a facility, managing water quality to promote good health and growth of selected aquatic species, participating in FFA personal and leadership development activities, and planning and conducting a supervised occupational experience program relevant to aquaculture.

 

q       WILDLIFE  (1 credit)

The Wildlife Management course is designed to teach technical knowledge and skills for entry-level positions in the conservation and/or management of wildlife enterprises. Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with analyzing problems and developing site plans including the essential elements, concepts, and skills related to wildlife management; understanding basic ecological concepts; implementing habitat management practices; identifying wildlife and fish species; analyzing policies, laws and regulations, and using natural resources for outdoor recreation; participation in personal and community leadership development activities and planning and implementing a relevant supervised agricultural experience; and participating in FFA activities.

Kayla Nix and Savannah Williams tried their hand at the mechanical bull during our first ever FFA SCHSRA Rodeo Event in March. 

 

State V.P. Brittany Mixson attended the rodeo and is pictured with Laura Maule, Dustin Beasley, Kayla Nix, and Jonathan Myers

 

Each year Collum’s foresters assist our chapter with training needed to compete in the State FFA Forestry Skills CDE.

 

Mr. Mckay brought worms from his home to help our chapter start a worm farm.

Chutes are ready for a bucking bull.  The weather was 35 degrees with 40 and 50 mph wind gusts during the day before the evening rodeo…brrrrr!

 

Clean-up was a job of members at the rodeo.  Devan Davis is the chaperone for the “trash picker uppers” J

 

We visited the State Capitol and House Rep. Lonnie Hosey during the State FFA  Legislative Day.  Sam Mckay, Don and Libby Still, Travis Ard, and Jeff Sandifer went along with us.

 

Ashley Hammet and Megan Armstrong enjoyed the WS FFA skating party in Lexington.

Clint, Ashley, and Megan also tried out the putt putt course during the skating party.

 

Clint was the ditchwitch operator for the Rodeo workday as we worked along with several community members to install lighting at the arena.

 

 

Amber Gunnells and her cuz, Jay Baxley worked to install electrical boxes on each of the light poles during the Rodeo Workday.

Student Teacher, Mr. Travis Ard, even got to put in some effort at the rodeo workday!

 

Jonathan Gray, Chapter President, is pictured accepting a $500 check from the Salkehatchie Forestry Assoc. to purchase more forestry equipment for our chapter.

Local farmers assisted our chapter with the set up and tear down of the rodeo arena.  Jason Still is pictured unloading the bucking chutes.

James Folk and  Cynthia Beasley, a parent, held down the fort at the admission gate both nights of the rodeo.

Colt Barker and Porter Smith work hard in the greenhouse to plant plugs for our Spring Greenhouse Sale.

Wildlife Management II students work on the aquaponics system in the greenhouse.

President Devan Davis and Mrs. Sandifer accepted the Governor’s Citation for Community Development and a $1000 check  from the USDA and SC Rural Rehabilitation Association during State Convention

Nick will attend Horry Georgetown Tech in the Fall in Forestry / Wildlife.

(Left) Jonathan Gray is accompanied by his father Johnny Gray and Mrs. Sandifer as he accepted a $1200 check and his award for State STAR in Placement for the work he has done over the past 3 years with various agricultural related businesses.  Jonathan will attend Clemson in the Fall in Forestry

Jonathan Gray currently works for SCDNR at the local fish hatchery, but has also had an internship with the US Forest Service and worked for Steve Sandifer and Son Farms and the Edisto REC.

Ashley Shealey worked at McDonald’s where she worked with customers, took orders at the drive thru, and managed delivery of orders.

Devan Davis showed cattle for the very first time at the State Fair and Orangeburg Co. Fair.  She learned to groom and handle her cow over a period of time.
