Mission:

The Building Construction program at the Barnwell County Career Center is designed to prepare the student for entry-level carpentry tasks under the supervision of an experienced carpenter.

· Hand tools

· Construction material

· Applied mathematics

· Framing

· Masonry

· Safety

· Electrical wiring

· Site preparation

· Elementary plumbing

6060 Building Construction Cluster I – (Carpentry, Electricity, Masonry, Plumbing) (Grades 10, 11)
Students learn the safe use and care of power tools and machines as well as the various hand tools used in the construction industry. The course focuses primarily on the carpentry trade in the construction industry. “Hands-on” experiences are used in student training as well as classroom presentations. Some preparation in mathematics will aid in a student’s progress, but any student is able to take and benefit from the course. Guest speakers are a part of classroom instruction. Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) membership is strongly encouraged. First year of a two-year program.
(2 credits)

Prerequisite: 2.0 overall GPA or 1.0 GPA and three (3) teacher recommendations

6061 Building Construction Cluster II – (Carpentry, Electricity, Masonry, Plumbing) (Grades 11, 12)
Students continue to add to the knowledge and experience that they acquired in the first year course. Students work on advanced projects and receive greater in-depth training in the trade areas introduced in the first year. Students are expected to be able to work more independently with less direct supervision from the instructor. Students may be recommended to participate in occupational cooperative training and/or the VICA skills competition. Guest speakers are part of the classroom instruction. Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) membership is strongly encouraged.

Second year of a two-year program. (2 credits)
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Building Construction I and Teacher's recommendation
